Cleaning: Clean your garden tools seasonally to protect your investment. Wash off any dirt by using a wire brush and a bucket of soapy water. After your garden tools are clean, wipe down the entire tool with Linseed or Tung oil - including the wooden handle. Linseed and Tung oil are drying oils and will coat and protect your tools from moisture. Rust on tools is the result of oxygen and water reacting with the metal. The point of using oil is to create a barrier between the metal and oxygen/water.

Sharpening: Garden tools from Fisher Blacksmithing take an edge nicely and will respond well to seasonal sharpening. If you are uncomfortable with sharpening your own garden tools, many hardware stores will offer this service for a nominal fee. To sharpen your tools, it is best to use a vise to hold the tool and then use a flat file or an angle grinder with an abrasive disc. Purchasing a new 10 inch flat file from the hardware is an inexpensive solution. Place the tool in the vice firmly then use the file to sharpen the edge of the garden tool, moving the file away from your body. Try to keep the angle consistent so the edge doesn’t get “rounded” off.

Each garden tool is built individually using traditional blacksmithing techniques:  Steel is heated to a red glow in the forge and then shaped over the anvil with a hammer. Joinery is completed using solid steel rivets.  Each tool is then set into its own hand turned handle of either American Black Walnut or Shagbark Hickory, creating a long-lasting garden tool with no welds.
